THE MPST FOUNDATION LIMITED
The MPST Foundation Ltd was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee on 31st July 2015 following a Special General Meeting of the members of the Medical Protection Society of Tasmania Inc held on 4th May of the same year, when a resolution to amend the Rules of the Society was passed in accordance with those Rules.
The amendment was made to change the objects of the Association by re-numbering Rule 2 (e) as Rule 2 (f) and adding a new rule, Rule 2 (e), which is now mirrored in its Constitution as the objects of the Foundation. This allowed the Society to transfer to the Foundation, funds in excess of those calculated to be necessary for the association to meet its indemnity requirements for claims which might be brought against prior and current members, and to use those funds in accordance with the Constitution of the Foundation.
Objects of the foundation
The Company has been established to be a charity whose purposes are to advance education in medicine (not including alternative medicine) and to advance health by any one or more of the following means:
- undertaking medical research and/or financially supporting medical research and/or studies in medicine by an Eligible Person;
- disseminating medical information to the public in Tasmania and/or financially supporting the dissemination of medical information to the public in Tasmania;
- publishing learned articles in medicine and/or financially supporting the publication of learned article in medicine by an Eligible Person;
- organising or financially supporting the organisation of medical conferences, seminars and other forums for the advancement of medical knowledge;
- establishing and administering scholarships, bursaries and other forms of financial assistance to encourage the undertaking of medical studies and/or medical research by Eligible Persons;
- providing financial assistance to hospitals and/or medical centres in Tasmania;
- providing training for medical professionals who are Eligible Persons regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of illnesses and diseases and/or financially supporting the provision of training for medical professionals who are Eligible Persons regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of illnesses and diseases;
- providing community health services focused on the needs of communities in Tasmania and/or financially supporting the provision of community health services focused on the needs of communities in Tasmania.
For the purposes of this Constitution a person is an Eligible Person if that person is a natural person who is either:
- a graduate of a university who:
- is a resident of Tasmania; and
- is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a medical practitioner; and
- practices medicine in Tasmania; or
- a student of medicine at the University of Tasmania who:
- is a resident of Tasmania; and
- is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a medical student.”
